Recruitment has opened for a 6-month paid Internship role with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. The successful intern is expected to start in March 2019 and will be based in our London Office.

The Company

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 13th year, connects more than 95 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 700 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of global GDP. Our recent ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40’s growing team of 150+ staff is headquartered in London, with offices in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 has an operating budget of c.$25m per year and is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations. 

The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. A seven person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40.

Measurement & Planning 

The work of the Measurement and Planning team focuses on building capacity within C40 cities to tackle climate change. Specifically, the team leads on the delivery of the Climate Action Planning Programme, a comprehensive programme of support to help cities delivery ambitious and equitable climate action plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to the impacts of climate change and deliver wider social, environmental, and economic benefits, in line with the Paris Agreement objectives.

This is achieved by developing standards, processes, and tools; providing access to training and technical support; and facilitating knowledge transfer and peer-to-peer exchange. More information on the programme and the support available to cities can be found here 

The Role 

The successful candidate will support the Measurement and Planning team in the delivery of the Climate Action Planning Programme. S/he will have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding of the review of climate action plans, the delivery of technical assistance and the development of learning resources and tools. S/he will gain valuable experience working with international colleagues in a fast-paced and exciting global organization.

The Measurement and Planning intern combines strong organisational, analysis and communication skills with an interest in working on climate change. The ideal candidate will be a motivated self-starter who has the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously, such as data collection, data analysis, research and report writing. 


The Responsibilities of the role will include: 
  • Providing qualitative and/or quantitative support to the Measurement m and Planning team in implementing the Climate Action Planning Programme.
  • Reviewing cities’ climate action plans against C40’s Climate Action Planning Framework.
  • Researching best practice and draft case studies.
  • Conducting research on various topics to support the team’s work.
  • Formatting and developing multimedia resources, presentations and case studies for the C40 Climate Action Planning Resource Centre.
  • Supporting the development and maintenance of a data base of actions cities are committing to.
  • Supporting the collection and analysis of greenhouse gas emissions data.
  • Providing general administrative and logistic support.
  • Additional duties as requested.

Person Specification
  • Background in urban planning, environmental policy, social science or related subject.
  • Good problem-solving, strategic thinking and analytical capabilities.
  • Interest in cities, sustainability and/or climate change.
  • Interest or experience working across different cultures, languages and time zones.
  • Good MS Excel and data management skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Fluent in English.
