Job Description:
Recruitment has opened for a 6-month paid Internship role with C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group. The successful intern is expected to start in June 2018 and will be based in our London Office.

The Company

The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, now in its 12th year, connects more than 90 of the world’s greatest cities which have committed to tackling climate change. We bring mayors from around the world together to learn from each other in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating resilient, sustainable and low carbon cities. C40 cities represent more than 650 million urban citizens and their economies account for 25% of global GDP. Our recent ‘Deadline 2020’ report sets out the critical role that the world’s major cities have to play in delivering the historic Paris Agreement to prevent catastrophic climate change.

C40’s growing team of 100+ staff is headquartered in London, with offices in New York, Rio de Janeiro, Copenhagen, Beijing and Paris, and individual staff based across 25+ different locations. C40 has an operating budget of c.$25m per year and is primarily funded through the generous support of philanthropic foundations.

The strategic direction of the organization is determined by an elected Steering Committee of C40 mayors, which is chaired by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo. Three-term Mayor of New York City Michael R. Bloomberg serves as President of the Board of Directors, which is responsible for operational oversight. An eight-person management team, led by Executive Director, Mark Watts, leads the day-to-day management of C40.

Communications & Events Team

C40’s Communications and Events Team is responsible for strategically positioning the C40 as one of the most impactful global climate organisations and raising the profile of our member cities in this regard. Events serve as a cornerstone of how the C40 engages with, provides support to, and facilitates connections between C40 Cities.

The C40 co-hosts a bi-annual C40 Summit with a selected C40 City that provides a global platform through which the work of C40 cities and Mayoral leadership are showcased and championed. C40 Summits are mayoral-level events. In addition, C40 and its partner Bloomberg Philanthropies produce the C40 Bloomberg Cities Awards, an event bringing together Mayors and senior city officials to recognise successful climate action.

Additional events may include additional thought leadership opportunities for C40 throughout the year and launches of new C40 Initiatives, Networks, projects or reports through press conferences.

The Role

The successful intern will support communications objectives particularly in the areas of graphic design and creative content. If selected, working a 40-hour week, you will have the opportunity to develop skills and understanding in a range of subject areas, gaining valuable experience working with international colleagues in a fast-paced and exciting global organization. The candidate will become an integral part of a small but dynamic team and interact with key players within the C40 organization and network. S/he will develop graphic design skills, writing & editing skills and project management skills, as well as subject matter expertise in international climate agenda.


The responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Support the Senior Manager of Creative Content in the development, planning, and execution of graphic design and creative materials to accompany a variety of communications campaigns and initiatives;
  • Contribute with creative and innovative ideas to reach and engage different audiences;
  • Under the supervision of the Senior Manager of Creative Content, design, create and edit graphics, charts, infographics, ads, presentations and other digital content;
  • Ensure creative materials closely adhere to organization brand guidelines and design/font standards;
  • Upload materials to and associated microsites;
  • Assist in producing and disseminating C40 newsletters;
  • Ad hoc administrative tasks as required;

Person Specification

  • Experience using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator is strongly preferred (working knowledge of After Effects and Premiere Pro a plus);
  • Solid communication skills— English written and verbal with an ability to convey complex information in a clear, concise and engaging way;
  • Knowledge of designing for web and digital is desirable;
  • Working knowledge of MailChimp, WordPress and other content management system desirable;
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and Twitter;
  • Ability to take ownership and follow through on tasks independently;
  • Ability to multitask and work well in a fast-paced and high-pressured environment;
  • Ability to work effectively across different cultures, languages and time zones;
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; advanced knowledge of Google Suite a plus;
Other Requirements:
  • Degree in Graphic Design or related field;
  • If shortlisted, we will ask for an example of your creative work, or a link to your design portfolio;
  • Working proficiency in French is desirable;

Some international travel may be required.
